Professional School Counselors are the heart of the school! As leaders and advocates in schools, professional school counselors contribute to the learning and development of all students. They are proactive in implementing their programs and in contributing to student achievement.

Based on the ASCA National Model, school counselors’ work involves the themes of leadership, advocacy, collaboration, and systemic change. School counselors are leaders and advocates for systemic change to enhance student success, development, learning, and achievement. As part of their role, school counselors collaborate with stakeholders to develop and implement programs to meet students’ needs. Also, collaboration involves teaming with stakeholders (e.g., teachers, parents) to support students and enhance their opportunities for success.

The documents posted on this site will help provide guidance to clarify the “Duties of School Counselors” to ensure that school counselors have the opportunity to develop and implement comprehensive developmental school counseling programs that remove barriers to learning and promote student success. The goal in Durham Public Schools is for all schools  to implement a  comprehensive school counseling program that encompasses the areas of academic, career and social-emotional development for all students and supports the overall academic mission of the school.

Your leadership and support is invaluable to the system.
